Route
Point-to-point

This is the north coast of Zealand, the stretch Danes half-jokingly call the Riviera. The Nordkyststien follows it from Hundested in the west to Helsingør, where Kronborg castle looks out over the narrow Sound between Denmark and Sweden.

It is gentle going and easy to reach, about an hour by train from Copenhagen. Over three or four days you pass long sandy beaches, fishing harbours like Gilleleje and Hornbæk, and the dunes and pine plantation of Tisvilde Hegn. By the last day Sweden is a thin line across the water.

What you'll walk through

  • Long sandy beaches along the Kattegat
  • Fishing harbours at Gilleleje and Hornbæk
  • The dunes and pine woods of Tisvilde Hegn
  • Kronborg castle at the finish, Shakespeare's Elsinore

Best season

May to September. Summer brings swimming and long evenings; the coast is exposed in winter.

Getting there

Both ends are on the rail network. Hundested is reached via Hillerød, and Helsingør has direct trains from Copenhagen, so you can walk it either way or in day sections.
