Built for the long walk
ThWay is a route-planning tool designed for multi-day hikers. Long-distance trails stretch across changing landscapes, and planning them means balancing daily distance, overnight stops, and your own walking rhythm. We believe the process should feel organised and enjoyable, not like a spreadsheet exercise.
Our algorithm (Routeplanner) takes your chosen trail and breaks it into daily sections based on your pace and preferences. Each day, it searches the surrounding area for accommodation, including hotels, B&Bs, hostels, shelters, campgrounds, and wild-camping options, and ranks them by how closely they match your ideal walking distance. You choose the stay that suits you, and the next day begins from there. You can also add custom stays while planning, and set a detour so the route can be adjusted to a specific point or area.
our vision
We want to make long-distance hiking more accessible by removing the friction from planning. Many people are eager to walk a trail, but the logistics can feel overwhelming: where do I sleep, and how far should I walk each day?
ThWay helps answer those questions. We currently cover long-distance trails in Denmark, including Hærvejen and other nationally waymarked routes, and we provide a day-by-day itinerary that fits your body, your schedule, and your ambitions.
We keep building on the Routeplanner. In time, we want it to show more of what lies along the way, such as practical stops, cultural points of interest, and notes from hikers who have walked the route before.
how it works
Start by choosing a hiking route and the sections you want to walk. Set your ideal daily distance, your maximum distance, and your walking hours, then generate the route. Plus members can also narrow stay types and search width to match their preferences more closely.
Day by day, the Routeplanner presents candidate stays. Each option shows the distance from your start point, how close it is to your ideal daily target, and the type of accommodation available. You choose the option that suits you best, and the Routeplanner recalculates the next day from there.
Once your route is complete, you can save it to your field log and share it with other hikers via a link. Plus includes unlimited saves, GPX/KML/GeoJSON downloads, and the option to swap a stay in a saved route for another one, after which the rest of the route recalculates.
the team
ThWay is built by a small team of hikers and developers based in Denmark. We started this project because we wanted a better way to plan our own long-distance walks. After hours of piecing together routes by hand, cross-referencing accommodation lists, and drawing on paper maps, we realised most of that work could be done by software.
So we built it and decided to share it with others. The project is still evolving: we are continuously adding new trails, improving accommodation data, and refining the routing logic based on feedback from real hikers.
people behind ThWay

Cand.merc.(it.) from CBS, with a particular interest in ML and LLMs, as well as a passion for solving problems for people across industries.
LinkedInCand.scient. in Geography and Geoinformatics from KU, with a particular interest in spatial data infrastructure and how geospatial complexity can be made navigable. At ThWay, that means turning trail networks and landscape data into routes people can actually plan a walk around. The broader aim is to get more people out exploring the world and its landscapes.
