about

Built for the long walk

Thway is a route planning tool designed specifically for multi-day hikers. Long-distance trails span hundreds of kilometres across changing landscapes, and planning them means juggling daily distances, finding accommodation each night, and adapting to your own walking pace. We believe that process should be as enjoyable as the walk itself, not a chore of spreadsheets and scattered notes.

Our algorithm takes your chosen trail and divides it into daily segments tuned to your pace and preferences. For each day it searches the surrounding area for accommodation (hotels, B&Bs, hostels, shelters, and wild camping spots) and ranks them by closeness to your ideal walking distance. You pick the stay that suits you, and the next day begins from there.

our vision

We want to make long-distance hiking accessible to more people by removing the friction from planning. Many aspiring hikers never take the first step because the logistics feel overwhelming: where do I sleep? How far can I walk in a day? What if I cannot find a place to stay in the middle of nowhere?

Thway answers those questions. We currently cover long-distance trails in Denmark, including the Hærvejen and other nationally waymarked routes, and give you a day-by-day itinerary that fits your body and your ambitions.

We are actively working to expand coverage to more trails and regions across Europe. In the longer term, we also want to add more rich data to the routes, such as elevation profiles, biodiversity information, and community-contributed notes from hikers who have walked the route before you.

how it works

Start by selecting a hiking route and the segments you want to walk. Set your ideal daily distance, your maximum, and the types of accommodation you are open to. Then hit generate.

Day by day, the algorithm presents you with candidate stays. Each option shows the distance from your starting point, how close it is to your ideal, and the type of accommodation. You pick the one that appeals to you, and the algorithm calculates the next day from there.

Once your route is complete, you can save it to your field log, export it as a GPX file for your GPS device, or share it with fellow hikers via a link. If you change your mind about a particular stay, you can swap it for an alternative, and the route recalculates automatically.

the team

Thway is built by a small team of hikers and developers based in Denmark. We started this project because we needed a better tool to plan our own long-distance walks. After spending hours piecing together routes by hand, cross-referencing accommodation lists, and drawing on paper maps, we decided there had to be a better way.

So we built one, and decided to share it with everyone. The project is under active development: we are continuously adding new trails, improving accommodation data, and refining the routing algorithm based on feedback from real hikers.
